Adam Towler
Motoring Writer

Biography

Adam has loved cars for as long as he can remember, probably since he was brought home from the maternity ward in the family MGB GT, although that's something he can't say with certainty!

Having dabbled with motoring journalism at the age of 11 with a home-produced Scalextric magazine - print run of one, hand made; a sales disaster in the school playground - he gained a degree in Car Design from Coventry University.

After spending his formative working years in the motor trade, he decided to pursue a long-held dream of becoming a motoring writer, and in 2003 joined the staff of the oldest car magazine in the world - 'Autocar' - based in the UK.

He spent the next four years at the title, progressing through the positions of Staff Writer to the coveted role of Road Tester, before becoming the magazine's youngest ever Road Test Editor in 2005.

Adam designed the 'Road Test GT' for performance cars in 2006, working closely with the MIRA test facility near Nuneaton to realise a test that included both wet and dry surface circuit times along with wet braking figures - for the first time in the prestigious Autocar Road Test.

In 2007 Adam was part of the Autocar redesign, and led the team that oversaw the inclusion of wet and dry lap times into every Road Test, along with a new MIRA based interior visibility test.

During these years he drove the majority of new cars released onto the market, from the Peugeot 107 to the Pagani Zonda S, and even ran an Ariel Atom as a long-term test car. He held the Autocar Road Test dry circuit lap record in a Porsche 997 GT3, and set the magazine's 0-100-0mph record in the Bugatti Veyron.

In the spring of 2007 Adam took the Editorship of the Pistonheads website, the most successful motoring website in the UK, and then newly purchased by Autocar's publishers the Haymarket Media Group. During his time there he oversaw a rise in site traffic, and the introduction of new writers and features.

Adam became a freelance journalist towards the end of 2007, and contributes to a broad selection of car magazines, lifestyle titles, national newspapers and websites, examples of which you will find in the Portfolio section of this website.
